There’s something so special about photographing a couple in a place that feels like an extension of who they are—and that’s exactly what this engagement session with Maria and Eric at the Daniel Stowe Conservancy felt like. Nestled in Belmont, North Carolina, just outside of Uptown Charlotte, this spot has always been a favorite of mine for engagement and portrait sessions. But this one? This one hit different.
With perfect weather, golden light, and gardens in full bloom, Maria and Eric’s session was filled with laughter, romance, and meaningful moments. These two are adventurous souls (they got engaged on McAfee Knob during a 3-day hike!), so it only made sense to choose a location as connected to nature as they are.
A New Name, A Broader Mission
You might know this place as Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, but recently it became the Daniel Stowe Conservancy. The change marks a shift in focus—from just displaying beautiful plants to embracing a broader mission of conservation, sustainability, and outdoor learning. It’s still every bit as magical (and still known by many as the crown jewel of Stowe), but now with an even deeper purpose behind its beauty.
Whether you’re wandering the lush paths, listening to live music on Saturday mornings, or strolling through the farmers market, the Daniel Stowe Conservancy has become a true outdoor community-building space along the shores of Lake Wylie.
Our Route Through the Gardens
We started the shoot in the White Garden, and honestly, it couldn’t have been a more perfect place to begin. The hydrangeas were in bloom, and Maria’s floral dress against the white florals was just dreamy. There’s something about the quiet elegance of this space that made it feel so romantic—like the world paused just for them.
Maria and Eric mentioned before the session that they were a little nervous—they’d never had professional photos taken before and were worried about feeling stiff or awkward, especially with their wedding day coming up. I totally get it! Most of my couples feel the same way at first, and I always reassure them that it’s completely normal. Unless you’re a full-time model (and let’s be real, who is?), being in front of a camera can feel strange at first. But within the first 10 minutes, they were already relaxing into it. By the end of our time together, they were laughing, twirling, and totally owning it like seasoned pros. They even told me they didn’t feel awkward at all—which made my day!
Next, we made our way to the Four Seasons Garden, and WOW—the light here was something else. With the sun filtering through the trees and flowers, we had this soft golden glow that made everything sparkle. This area has so much variety, and it’s a fantastic backdrop if you’re looking for vibrant colors and romantic textures.
From there, we stepped into the William H. Williamson, III Conservatory, often lovingly called the Orchid Conservatory. Inside, the display of tropical plants—including the most incredible succulent and air plant arches—made us feel like we were in a rainforest. The light coming through the glass ceiling created this natural spotlight effect that was honestly a photographer’s dream! My personal favorite was when Eric picked Maria up and twirled her around under the Spanish moss covered arches.
Finally, we wrapped up the session at the Canal Garden. With long reflecting pools and elegant symmetry, this garden has such a peaceful vibe and the colors of the gorgeous flowers planted along the fountain were just gorgeous! The entire area honestly looked like a watercolor painting. As the sun started to dip, so did Eric and Maria for some gorgeous final images to end our session on!
A Love Rooted in Adventure
Maria and Eric’s story is one of those that feels straight out of a movie. They met back in 2011 at a high school district banquet—they were seated at the same table. That random meeting turned into friendship, then love, as they both attended the same college.
When Eric proposed in October 2024, it was supposed to happen along the Foothills Trail—but thanks to Hurricane Helene, plans shifted. Instead, they hiked the Virginia Triple Crown, and he proposed on day two at the stunning McAfee Knob, one of the most iconic viewpoints on the Appalachian Trail.
They’re planning their honeymoon in Acadia National Park, hiking more trails and taking in the beauty of nature together. As someone who loves the outdoors, National Parks, and photographing adventurous souls, I couldn’t have dreamed up a better couple!
Why Daniel Stowe Conservancy is the Perfect Place for Photos
If you’re looking for a location that combines romantic gardens, tropical greenhouses, peaceful water features, and a commitment to sustainability, the Daniel Stowe Conservancy is it. It’s the kind of place that offers more than just beautiful backdrops—it tells a story of community, conservation, and love for the natural world.
Between the Trailhead Store, the events hosted on the shores of Lake Wylie, and its roots as one of the most iconic botanical gardens in North Carolina, this place is a dream come true for couples who want something meaningful for their special day as well as people who want to connect with their community.
