A Providence Cotton Mill Engagement Session in the Rain | Meagan + Seth

Some couples book a session and you think, “this is going to be a great gallery.” Then there are the couples who show up and you think, “I cannot believe I get to do this job.” Meagan and Seth are firmly in that second category, and their Providence Cotton Mill engagement session is one I keep coming back to look at.

Let me set the scene.

When the Forecast Says Rain and You Do It Anyway

When Meagan and Seth first reached out, I knew immediately we were going to get along. They are both chemists (my husband Tyler was a chemist before he switched careers!). They are gamers (always love a gamer couple). And Meagan plays Stardew Valley, which is also my game of choice, which means we have a standing conversation topic for approximately the rest of our lives.

Their wedding venue is Covington Gardens, and they want garden fairy vibes for the whole celebration. When we talked about style, the word “enchanted” came up more than once. That tracks completely, because Meagan’s engagement ring has a primary emerald stone (which is gorgeous – check below to see!).

So. The session. We were booked at The Providence Cotton Mill in Maiden, NC, and the weather app was not being kind to us in the days leading up to it. Rain in the forecast. Not a passing cloud, actual rain.

Here is my policy on rain: we can either reschedule to try for a dry day or we can shoot anyway (and make it beautiful). They chose the latter and I’m so glad they did!

I packed my clear umbrellas, got my off-camera flash set up low on the ground, and we made magic. I am not being dramatic when I say that some of the images from that rainy session are my absolute favorites from the whole gallery. The way the flash catches the falling rain, the way Meagan and Seth were completely unbothered and just laughed through the whole thing, the soft glow on the umbrellas, the moody atmosphere of the mill behind them. If you had told me at the start of that day that the rain shots would be the ones I saved for my own files, I would have believed you, because rain and off-camera flash is one of those combinations that just works every single time.

Why the Providence Cotton Mill is a Dream for Engagement Sessions

I had been wanting to photograph an engagement session at The Providence Cotton Mill for a while, and now that I have, I fully understand the hype. This historic venue sits on the outskirts of Maiden, NC (about 45 minutes from Charlotte), surrounded by rolling green fields and a wooded backdrop. The building itself is 130 years old, with soaring 30-foot ceilings, rows of grand arched windows, and walls of weathered plaster and exposed brick that give every photo an old-world, European feel.

What makes it so ideal for a Providence Cotton Mill engagement session specifically (versus a wedding, when the venue is full of guests and florals and all the gorgeous chaos) is the space and the light. When it’s just you, your partner, and your photographer, you have room to actually move through the building. The arched windows create incredible natural light frames even on an overcast day. The open-air design means the space stays bright and airy without feeling like you’re stuck inside. And the grounds outside offer a completely different look, so you get variety without ever getting in a car.

For couples planning their wedding here, doing your engagement session at the venue is also just practical. You get to see the light at different times, figure out where you feel most comfortable, and walk in on your wedding day already knowing your favorite spots.

Meagan + Seth: The Details

Meagan’s ring deserves its own paragraph. The emerald center stone is so deeply saturated and the setting is absolutely perfect for her. We spent a genuinely embarrassing amount of time getting close-up shots of it because I refused to leave without doing it justice.

They came dressed in coordinating outfits that felt relaxed and real and completely them, not stiff or overly posed. That is exactly the energy you want for an engagement session. The best engagement photos are the ones that look like you, not like a version of you that dressed up for a catalog.

What I love most about photographing couples like Meagan and Seth is that they are not performing. They are just together. You can feel their comfort with each other in every frame. He makes her laugh without even trying. She leans into him like it is the most natural thing in the world. My job in those moments is to stay quiet, keep my shutter moving, and get out of the way.

The rain helped, honestly. There is something about bad weather that strips away any lingering self-consciousness. When you are standing in the rain with an umbrella laughing at the absurdity of the situation, you forget that a camera is pointed at you. Those are the photos that feel real decades later.

A Note on Rain Sessions (and Why You Should Not Cancel)

I get messages from couples every season asking whether they should reschedule when rain is in the forecast. My answer is almost always, “Let’s go anyway!”, and Meagan and Seth’s session is a perfect example of why.

Rain creates atmosphere that you simply cannot manufacture on a sunny day. Reflections on wet ground. The soft, even light of overcast skies (which is actually a photographer’s dream because it eliminates harsh shadows). The drama of an off-camera flash catching individual drops in the air. Clear umbrellas are one of my favorite tools because they let light pass through, which means your faces stay lit and the umbrella becomes a beautiful framing element rather than a dark canopy blocking everything. Meagan and Seth are getting married at Covington Gardens, and their vision, garden fairy enchantment with lush greenery, soft florals, and that magical in-between feeling of being somewhere that does not quite belong to the ordinary world, is going to translate so beautifully into wedding photos. I am already thinking about the light through the trees, the way an emerald ring photographs in golden hour, the kind of photos you frame for your walls and look at twenty years later.
