romantic portrait bride and groom among flowers at Mariposa Chapel Iron Station NC

If you’ve been searching for a little white chapel wedding photographer near Charlotte, I have a feeling that you’re going to like this post! Grace and Jacob’s spring wedding at Mariposa Chapel & Events in Iron Station, North Carolina was one of those days that reminds me exactly why I love this work: rain, laughter, taco bars, LED sparklers, and a love story that was absolutely impossible not to photograph beautifully. Buckle up, because this one is good!

About Mariposa Chapel & Events

Nestled in the rolling hills of Iron Station, NC (just about 30 minutes from Charlotte) Mariposa Chapel & Events is one of the most charming historic wedding venues I’ve ever had the privilege of photographing. Originally founded in 1887 as a humble community church, this lovingly restored little white chapel has been transformed into a picturesque wedding venue without losing a single drop of its historic soul. White walls, wooden floors, and charming pews give the chapel interior that warm, airy, timeless feel that photographs absolutely dreamily. And the enchanting gardens, mighty oak trees, and outdoor fountain? Chef’s kiss.

Mariposa Chapel is ideal for couples dreaming of an intimate wedding. With space for up to 100 guests, it’s the perfect setting for a celebration that feels personal and close-knit rather than overwhelming. They offer included florals in their wedding packages (more on that below!), have a gorgeous bridal suite and groom’s lounge for getting ready, and the owner, Annea is truly a gem to work alongside. If you’re not already touring this venue, put it on your list!

When It Rains on Your Wedding Day (A Love Letter to Pivoting)

Okay, let’s talk about the weather! The moment Grace’s hair and makeup was finished (and I mean the exact moment) when we were able to take her bridal portraits in the garden, the sky opened up and it started to rain. Instead, we did a full pivot right there in the chapel.

Here’s what I always tell my couples: rain on your wedding day is not a disaster. It is an opportunity. And Grace and Jacob? They leaned into it completely.

We used the gorgeous interior of the chapel itself for getting-ready portraits. The soft light coming through the windows was gorgeous. The white walls, the quiet intimacy of the space, honestly, some of my absolute favorite images from the day came from those moments. A historic chapel provides such a stunning natural backdrop that you barely even need the outdoors!

Later, we headed outside with an umbrella and a parasol, and the result was some of the most romantic wedding photography I’ve captured all year. There is something so cinematic about rain on a wedding day. Grace and Jacob were completely present with each other, and it shows in every single frame.

We also snuck in a few night portraits after dark, and wow. The combination of the glow of the string lights and that rain-kissed atmosphere made for images that feel more like a scene from a film than a wedding gallery. I have photographed a few weddings here in the rain and every time I leave with images I am obsessed with!

Grace & Jacob’s Wedding Style

If you love soft, romantic, feminine wedding aesthetics, you are going to swoon over this one. Grace and Jacob chose a palette of pinks, reds, and whites throughout, and it was stunning against the white chapel backdrop.

The bridesmaids wore a gorgeous mix of solid and patterned pink dresses — that kind of “mix and match” approach always photographs so beautifully because it adds visual interest and lets each person’s personality shine. The guys were sharp in tan suits with pink ties and pink pocket squares, which was the perfect complement to the bridesmaids without being too matchy-matchy.

Florals were included with Mariposa Chapel’s wedding package, and they were lush and romantic. All those pinks and reds and whites woven throughout the ceremony space and reception tables made the whole venue feel like a garden party come to life.

The Reception Under the Tent (And the Most Lively Dancefloor of the Season)

Because of the rain, the reception was held under Mariposa Chapel’s indoor event space and the beautiful white tent. Honestly, there was something incredibly cozy about Grace and Jacob having their first dance *literally* surrounded (cozy on all sides!) by their friends and family. Rain on a tent also is its own kind of soundtrack for a wedding night!

There was one fun logistical puzzle: with the dancefloor placed in the middle of the tables (to keep everyone sheltered), first dances required a little creative maneuvering. I’ve photographed enough weddings to know how to work with a space rather than against it, and we made it gorgeous. After dinner, the tables were moved to open up the full dancefloor, and what followed was one of the most lively, joyful receptions I have ever witnessed. The energy under that tent in the rain was absolutely electric.

Oh, and the food? A taco bar. It was incredible (and catered by Mariposa!). Guests were going back for seconds, and the whole vibe felt relaxed and celebratory in the best way.

The night ended with an LED sparkler and bubble exit — which, under the glow of the tent lights with rain softly falling in the background, was absolutely breathtaking. It is the kind of send-off that looks like something out of a dream, and I cannot wait for you to see the photos.

Tips for Couples Planning a Wedding at Mariposa Chapel

If Grace and Jacob’s day has you dreaming of your own wedding at this little gem just outside Charlotte, here are a few things I’d love for you to know:

Have a rain plan — and trust it. Mariposa Chapel’s white tent is beautiful and functional, and their team is incredible at pivoting. Talk to Annea early about your indoor and outdoor options so that if the weather changes, you’re not scrambling, you’re just moving to Plan B with confidence.

Take advantage of the bridal suite. It’s private, it’s beautiful, and the light in there is wonderful for getting-ready portraits. Even if the weather is perfect, spend some time in there before the ceremony. You won’t regret it!

Lean into the chapel interior for portraits. The white walls and charming pews of this historic chapel are stunning photographic backdrops. Don’t skip interior portraits just because you’re excited about the gardens!

Consider a night portrait session. The grounds after dark are magical, especially with the string lights and the garden lit up. Build a few minutes into your timeline for it. You will thank yourself later.

Book your vendors early. Mariposa Chapel’s packages include florals, coordination, and venue styling, which takes so much off your plate. But your photographer? Your videographer? Your DJ? Your Coordinator? Those are vendors you’ll want to secure early. This venue is becoming increasingly popular in the Charlotte area, and dates fill up fast!
