If you’re dreaming of North Carolina Waterfall Engagement Photos that blend natural beauty with a sense of adventure, Crabtree Falls in Western North Carolina might just be your perfect spot. Nestled off the Blue Ridge Parkway, this stunning waterfall is one of my favorite spots to photograph couples who are up for a little bit of a hike and a whole lot of fun.
Recently, I had the pleasure of capturing Bailey and Elliot’s adventure engagement session here. They’re students at Appalachian State University, and though they hadn’t done much hiking before, they were completely up for exploring the North Carolina mountains with me for their engagement shoot. My husband and I celebrated our first Valentine’s Day together at this waterfall years ago, so the falls have a special place in my heart. That trip sparked the idea of our Opt-Outside Valentine’s Day, where we spent the day exploring nature today and it’s one of my favorite things that we do every year! I love introducing couples to places that feel like hidden gems, and Crabtree Falls always delivers—especially in the fall.
A Fall Adventure in the Blue Ridge Mountains
Fall is hands-down my favorite time of day (well, season!) to shoot at Crabtree Falls. The trees surrounding the waterfall burst into bright yellows and oranges, creating a vibrant backdrop that truly captures the magic of the Blue Ridge Mountains. On this particular morning, we had some nice clouds, which made the fall colors pop and added an almost cinematic quality to the images—think The Notebook but nestled in the Appalachian Trail region.
There’s a small pool at the base of the falls, and it’s become one of my signature spots for capturing romantic moments during an engagement shoot. Bailey and Elliot bravely stepped in (yep, even in the chilly water!) and their laughter and connection made for some of the most heartwarming images of their love story. It was their first time visiting this waterfall, and they told me afterward they’d never had so much fun during a photo session.
Tips for Planning Your Waterfall Engagement Session
If you’re considering North Carolina Waterfall Engagement Photos, here are a few tips:
- Time of Day Matters: For the best lighting and fewer crowds, I always recommend early mornings. Plus, there’s something magical about starting your day surrounded by the sounds of falling water and rustling leaves.
- Have a Backup Plan: Weather in Western North Carolina can be unpredictable. I always come prepared with alternative surrounding areas just in case—Asheville, for instance, has plenty of options for an Asheville engagement session if fog turns into rain.
- Bring Your Sense of Adventure: Most waterfalls in the area require a little bit of a hike, so comfortable shoes and a flexible mindset are a must.
- Leave No Trace: Help preserve the natural beauty of these locations so other couples can enjoy them too.
